Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure

On September 30th 2014 the mandatory licensure of pharmacy technicians was signed into effect by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. This law will require an individual to obtain & maintain one of three licenses in order to practice as a pharmacy technician. These licenses include a Pharmacy Technician License, a Temporary License, or a Limited license. Pharmacies will be expected to ensure that all practicing individuals maintain a license.

Pharmacy Technician License:

  • Submit an application for licensure to the state of Michigan.
  • Have graduated high school or passed the GED.
  • Submit proof of passing a pharmacy technician certification exam or an employer exam approved by the Michigan Board of Pharmacy.
  • 2 year renewable license
  • Must submit proof of 20 hours of continuing education within the two-years prior to renewal

Temporary Pharmacy Technician License:

  • Submit an application for licensure to the state of Michigan
  • Meant for individuals who are preparing to take the pharmacy technician certification exam, or individuals who plan to take this exam.
  • 210 day non-renewable license

Limited Pharmacy Technician License:

  • Be employed by a pharmacy as a technician on the effective date.
  • Be continuously employed by that pharmacy since the effective date.
  • Submit an application for licensure to the state of Michigan
  • Submit proof of 1,000 hours practicing as a pharmacy technician in the 2 years prior to submitting the application.
  • Available for renewal every 2 years
  • License is no longer eligible for renewal if the technician is not employed at the pharmacy where the technician obtained their limited license, or if the technician practices at another pharmacy.

What does this mean for the pharmacy, pharmacists, and pharmacy operators:

  • Must ensure that any practicing technician meets all applicable requirements.
  • Pharmacists, or any individual who owns, manages, or conducts a pharmacy must ensure that no duties specific to a licensed pharmacy technician are performed by anyone other than a licensed pharmacy technician.
